The Junior League of Rhode Island has a strong historic focus on the well-being of children and families, holding a Touch-A-Truck event is a natural fit for our organization. This event will be centered around children, with the aim of fostering in them a strong sense of community by tapping into their natural fascination with our neighborhood helpers and the machines they use to perform their jobs. We hope kids will leave with an appreciation of and fondness for the folks who make the world we live in work, as well as an awareness of the possibilities for their own futures.
We will also take this opportunity to highlight our new community focus–youth aging out of foster care. We plan to invite foster families with whom we’ve worked or hope to work so that they can have a fun family day while getting to know us and what kind of support we can offer. Children placed in foster care represent some of the most vulnerable and insecure members of our society, and are the ones in greatest need of a strong sense of community and trust in communal and authority figures.
