AJLI Fact Sheet
Mission
The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. (AJLI) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
Vision
The Junior League: Women Around the World as Catalysts for Lasting Community Change.
Reaching Out
The Association of Junior Leagues International reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.
Organizational Structure
The 295 Junior Leagues throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain have a collective membership of more than 193,000 women. The international headquarters in New York City serves as a base from which staff and volunteers serve the Junior Leagues. With a staff of nearly 50 talented individuals, AJLI is organized into six departments under the leadership of Executive Director Jane Silverman: Centennial Planning, Communications & Development, Finance, Technology & Administration, Governance & Strategic Planning, Leadership & Organizational Development and League Services.
AJLI is governed by an 18-member Board of Directors, all of whom are members of the Junior League. The Board is accountable to the Leagues for the development of ends policies, and the Board has recently adopted a system of Policy Governance. An 8-Member Resolutions Committee of elected League members manages the process of determining AJLI external policies for community impact. A 17-Member Nominating Committee of elected League Members manages the process that determines a slate of nominees for Association leadership positions.
Funding
AJLI is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. All of AJLI's programs and activities are supported by membership dues, foundation and corporate grants and revenue-producing efforts.
Technical Assistance and Resources
AJLI's professional staff, independent trainers and Service Consultants provide services to Leagues through individual consultations, regional training sessions and national meetings. Areas of assistance include:
- community programming
- networking
- collaboration
- organizational leadership
- financial management
- fundraising
- communications
- marketing
- strategic planning
- membership
The Association encourages an approach to community impact that involves direct service, public awareness and advocacy.
AJLI also produces a number of resources to provide technical assistance, background information and strategies for community impact. Topics range from Multi cultural Development to Training in a Box to Personnel Practices . In addition, AJLI provides publications for the Leagues including the one-page The Power of Association . In an effort to expand outreach to other organizations and communication Resolutions Committee of elected League members manages the process of determining AJLI external policies for community impact. A 17-Member Nominating Committee of elected League Members manages the process that determines a slate of nominees for Association leadership positions.
In an effort to expand outreach to other organizations and communication between AJLI and the Leagues and among the Leagues themselves, the Association maintains a website and will be expanding the site on an ongoing basis.
In 1998, AJLI introduced its website at http://www.ajli.org which can be visited by anyone with Internet access. The site has two sections: one for the general public and a larger area for League members only. To access the members-only portion of the site, members should contact the Corresponding Secretary at Shakespeare's Head.
The public part of the website provides a history of the Junior League movement, a description of some successful Junior League community programs, and contact information for all the Leagues in the Association along with links to League websites. AJLI will soon add a What's New section to the site.
The members-only section of the site offers more detailed information on:
AJLI governance, including contact information for governance leaders
AJLI services, including a current training calendar, available printed and video resources, individual member benefits and more
AJLI awards and League affinity groups
In addition, the site offers all League members an opportunity to communicate and network with one another through the Message Board facility.
