Junior League hosts statewide forum on childhood obesity

The Junior League of Rhode Island will host “Weighing In on Childhood Obesity,” a statewide forum Friday, Nov. 18 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza. The forum will focus on the national epidemic of childhood obesity, its physical and mental consequences, and viable solutions.

The educational forum will feature a panel of local experts who will lead a group discussion about the complexities of childhood obesity, achievements to-date, and how to encourage the community to address this issue.

Panelists will include: Dorothy Brayley: Executive Director, Kids First / Real Food First; Elizabeth Lange, M.D. MD FAAP: Pediatrician, Waterman Pediatrics / Coastal Medical, Inc; Immediate Past President, RI Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics; Eliza Lawson, MPH: Program Manager, Initiative for a Healthy Weight, RI Department of Health and Frank Terranova, MCFE: Assoc. Instructor, Johnson & Wales University; Host of NBC10’s Cooking with Class.

Each of these experts will provide perspective on an issue that requires immediate attention in our state.

“The Rhode Island statistics are startling,” says Petra Jenkins, President of the Junior League of Rhode Island.

“During the 2009 – 2010 school year 18.9 percent of Rhode Island’s seventh graders were obese, up from 16.8 percent just three years before. The Junior League of Rhode Island is seeking to raise awareness of this issue and to identify solutions. The first step is to examine all of the relevant factors, which will be one component of our panel discussion,” Jenkins said in a statement.

The forum is free and open to the public. With a suggested donation of $11, participants will receive the cookbook, Kids in the Kitchen.

The Junior League of Rhode Island, Inc. (JLRI) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Since 1921, more than 16,000 women from Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts have participated as members. More than 2.2 million hours of community service have been contributed valued at more than $40 million, and The Junior League of Rhode Island, Inc. has contributed more than $1.5 million to more than 250 community partners statewide.
